Good morning, Syracuse!

Happy May the 4th! May the Force be with your inbox. Amazon is presenting something new to Syracuse drone delivery. The company is hosting a community information session to introduce its Prime Air program to residents, and if the expansion goes through, your next order could be dropping from the sky in under two hours. Also this week: over 1,600 Lysander residents are pushing back on a proposed 300 MW data center in their backyard, and the DeWitt Starbucks holds a union vote on Wednesday. Also, Mother's Day is Sunday, and the forecast seems to be actually cooperating. Let's get into it.

Amazon's Prime Air drone delivery program is eyeing Syracuse for an expansion. The company is hosting a community information session to introduce the program to local residents. If you've ever wanted a six-propeller hexacopter to drop a box of paper towels in your driveway from 10 feet up, now may be your chance.

The take: This is either the coolest thing to happen to CNY package delivery in decades, or a preview of a very buzzy Wednesday afternoon.

When ICE detained a Syracuse man named Rafael, his family turned to social media to organize support - and ultimately secured his release. He's free, but as Central Current reports, living with the ongoing fear that it could happen again. The story puts a local face on a nationwide enforcement surge.

The take: The relief of getting someone out is real. So is the uncertainty about what comes next.

More than 1,600 Lysander residents have signed a petition asking the town board to pump the brakes on a proposed 300 MW hyperscale data center planned for 124 acres off Hencle Boulevard and Oswego Road. The Lysander Town Board heard them - directing its attorney to draft a moratorium on new data centers. The catch: as of last week, no formal application has even been submitted to the town's planning board yet. The land, owned by Ranalli Super DC LLC, is currently listed for sale at $60 million. On May 7th at 6:30 PM at the Town Hall (8220 Loop Road, Baldwinsville), there will be a final vote on the approval of a moratorium.

The take: 1,600 signatures before a single application hits the planning board. Show up on Thursday to speak or demonstrate the public’s concern.

Workers at the Starbucks on Erie Boulevard East in DeWitt head to the polls on May 6 to vote on whether to unionize. Two other Onondaga County Starbucks locations - in Liverpool and at Destiny USA - have already voted to join Starbucks Workers United. The vote comes amid a broader national standoff, with thousands of workers across the country pushing the company to bargain in good faith.

The take: Three union stores in one county would be a real statement from CNY. Keep an eye on Wednesday's result.

A Democratic primary is shaping up in the NY State Assembly's 129th District, with progressive challenger Maurice "Mo" Brown running against longtime Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli. Brown has called Magnarelli an obstacle to progress. Magnarelli says his experience in Albany is exactly what CNY needs. The primary is the first test of whether local voters are in the mood for generational change.

The take: Magnarelli has held this seat for decades. If Brown makes it competitive, that alone is the story.

Weather

A tale of two halves this week. Today is the gem, 73°F with low rain chances, the best day of the week to get outside. Enjoy it, because Tuesday matches the warmth but brings a 75% chance of rain. Wednesday is where it falls apart: temperatures drop to the low 50s with more rain likely. Thursday bounces back a bit into the mid-50s and dries out. The extended forecast for the Mother's Day weekend isn't locked in yet, so check back closer to Friday before committing to those outdoor brunch plans. Keep the umbrella in the car through mid-week and cross your fingers for Sunday.

Paws Up for Adoption

This week's picks come from the CNY SPCA in Mattydale, where a couple of dogs are ready to leave the shelter life behind.

Pongo, an adult male Dalmatian, is exactly as handsome as the spots suggest. The shelter calls him a "fun-loving fella with an infectious smile," happiest when he's got a ball to chase and a family to share adventures with. Medium-sized (26-60 lbs), vaccinated, neutered.

Precious, a senior female Pit Bull Terrier, is looking for someone patient enough to give her the quiet, settled home she's earned. Senior dogs in shelters are often the last to be adopted and the first to deserve it. Visit her Petfinder page for her full story and more photos.

The CNY SPCA is at 5878 East Molloy Road in Mattydale, open Monday through Saturday, 11 AM to 4 PM.
