Hello, Syracuse

Summer is winding down and the calendar is somehow busier than ever. Downtown is about to get another breakfast option (in a building that is getting some TLC), a local cocktail bar is going dark for the healthiest reason imaginable, and the events lineup is the biggest one we have published all year. Billy Idol at Lakeview, Slightly Stoopid at Beak & Skiff, plus enough workshops, markets, and live music to fill every night this week. Let's get into it.

Eggs and Toast is cracking open a second spot, and this one is landing in the Chimes Building downtown. It is the same team behind the wildly popular original, and the news gives another sign of life to a building that is getting some TLC lately. The Chimes building will also have 152 mixed-income apartments as a part of a $50M redevelopment project. No word yet on an opening date just yet.

Micron has committed funding for a program that puts money into 530A IRA accounts for local kids. These new accounts come with seed money for some: $1,000 for babies, another $250 for kids of all ages in Central New York. In some cases, kids here can qualify for even more.

The local carpenters union held an open house to recruit new members as trade demand keeps climbing. Attendees got to meet current members and learn about apprenticeship pathways. With Micron, I-81, and the broader construction pipeline in motion, demand for skilled trades is only going up.

House of the Week

Waterfront on the Jamesville Reservoir with your own dock and water views from every room on the main floor. And of course this house is within the the highly desirable Jamesville-DeWitt school district.

Syracuse History

@syracusehistory on IG

@syracusehistory on IG just sent us straight back to the late 90s. The post shared a nostalgic look at Kahunaville, the tropical-themed restaurant and arcade on the lower level of the Carousel Mall (now Destiny USA) that opened in 1998 and closed in 2005. Meier's Creek Brewing has now paid direct homage with a new beer whose label (designed by @theandyorr) is a straight callback to the Kahunaville era. Anytime I see these references it is a nice trip down memory lane.

Local Artist Spotlight

Enso Bizarro aka Nick West, a Syracuse artist whose work first caught our eye on the walls of the old All Who Wander location. My wife and I needed art for our office at the time, and Nick was our guy. His style is unmistakable and it still holds up years later. If you are looking for a local artist to follow (or buy from), he belongs on your radar.

That's a wrap for this week, Syracuse. See you next Monday.
